Yo guuuuys,

Happy Easter! We don’t do easter overhere, but it actually is a different holiday here for the next few days and it’s called the Songkran fastival. Someone yesterday told me if was Thailand’s new years, but I havwn’t confirmed that as true yet.

Basically, it’s the water festival- you throw buckets of water over each other and party in the streets. There’s also this powdered clay type stuff that they mix with water to create a light grey soupy mud, and people rubit on your face. Everyone’s got squirtguns and it’s an all out battle. Traditionally, pouring waer over someone for this festival is a sign of respect and good fortune on them, so basically they just have to take it and thank you :D

There was a parade yesterday and I was in it too! I met up with my workout group and they gave me the same flowery shirt they were wearing, and we were off! We had a sweet lil float and a crew of hand drummers with us and we danced around and played with all the water. I had a supersoaker and got in all out battles with all the lids on the sidelines- it was great.

After I dropped off one of my workout friends, I went back to the park (ground zero of the festival) and met a buncha fun young people and had some beers with um. There’s a main road that goes thru the park, and there were cars and trucks lined up on each side blasting music with people dancing all over them. There was a constant flow of slow moving carsand bikes coming down the road, and they were all getting covered head to toe with clay and water. I’venever seen such a thing.

Given the wet state of everything, it would have been suicide for me to bring my camera… but today I’m gunna try to find a way to get some shots.

As the day went on, we were drunk, and as one thing led to another I ended up in one of the ponds along the road… I donno, everyone was doing it and it seemed like a good idea at the time. It wasn’t until my 2nd or 3rd trip in that I relized my keys had floated outa my pocket at one point… but luckily Zoe was there to give me a ride home when I could grab my extra set and go get my bike. Time to make an extra backup set again :p

After going back to the park later in the evening, Zoe and I shopped around and ate some food. I got a chance to show off my freelines and saw some great handmade crafts, so it was a great success! And just before I left, I grabbed a little snack to-go so that I could share it here with you:

goon fun, eh?

Anyway, I’m off to join the festival again- it’ll be going down for the next few days, so no school for me!

Trevor, Mark and I just watched this and we’re happy to see that you are getting your protein. Personally, I’ll take chicken!
I’m blown away that you didn’t use any water to wash Jiminy down-you’re my hero!
Enjoy the festival. Sounds like it is a (water) blast!
    Love and miss you,
    Linda

These super-soaker holidays are everywhere! Just so you don’t think you’re too special, read this:

“Dyngus Day, also spelled Dingus Day, is a Polish holiday always held the Monday after Easter. It is very popular in Poland, and in Polish communities in America. After the long Lenten holiday, Dyngus Day is a day of fun. And, perhaps a little romantic fun.

There are all sort of ways for boys to meet girls. But, this one takes the cake.

Guys, on this day, get to wet the ladies down. Sprinkling or drenching with water is the goal as they chase after the ladies with squirt guns, buckets, or other containers of water. The more bold and gallant boys may choose to use cologne. Hitting (gently, please) the ladies on the legs with switches or pussy willows is also common.”
